Where's My Lab-grown Meat?

For decades now, scientists have been promising us untold marvels, from jetpacks to hovercars to computers that can think! But where are these wonders of technology? In "Where's My Jetpack?", Old Man Newman demands answers, and our crack research team discusses the unforeseen pitfalls and setbacks facing new technology, and tells us exactly how long it will be before science fiction becomes science fact!

In this episode of Where's My Jetpack?, Old Man Newman demands to know, "Where's My Lab-grown Frankenmeat?"

It has been called the "fast food of the future", and (of course) the "Frankenburger", and unlike some of the other items we've covered in the past on Where's My Jetpack?, this innovation could be right around the corner! The idea of "cultured meat" (meat produced using cultured cells in vitro) has been around for a very long time. A staple of science fiction, even Winston Churchill reportedly saw the development of this technology as inevitable, writing in 1936:

Fifty years hence, we shall escape the absurdity of growing a whole chicken in order to eat the breast or wing, by growing these parts separately under a suitable medium.

Perhaps the most obvious implication of such a technological leap would be for "ethical vegetarians", those who avoid consuming meat (or other animal products) because of the suffering that these animals endure. Cultured meat has the potential to curb or even eliminate this suffering.

But allowing vegetarians to return to their omnivorous ways is just the beginning.

Worldwide, more than 240 million metric tons of meat are consumed each year, and raising livestock accounts for roughly 70% of all agricultural land use. Based on existing trends, experts predict that this number will nearly double in the next forty years, with most of the growth in production occurring in the developing world. Meat production has a serious environmental impact.* Livestock contribute to climate change directly via methane production, but also indirectly due to destruction of forested land which would otherwise sequester carbon from the atmosphere. A 2007 report from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change notes that 80% of deforestation is a direct result of agricultural activities.

Disease transmission from livestock to humans also poses a danger, with outbreaks of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (or "mad cow") and various strains of influenza (the so-called "bird" and "swine" flus, for example) springing to mind, not to mention more common food-borne illnesses such as salmonella and E. coli. Additionally, the use of antibiotics in farming has been noted as a contributor to increasing antibiotic resistance in bacteria.

So there is clearly a market for this vat-grown meat. But, as I've said, the idea has been around for a long time, and not much has come of it. Four years ago, when Scientific American covered the story of a Dutch laboratory working to create a sausage out of pork stem cells, the nascent proto-meat was little more than a viscous stew: they hadn't yet got the meat out of what they called "the snot phase", and it was years away from being "sausage grade".

As is often the case in science, progress is made slowly but steadily, rather than in leaps and bounds. In August 2013, a team of scientists out of Maastricht University in the Netherlands made headlines when they taste-tested the world's first in vitro hamburger. The beef was five years in the making, and while the taste reportedly wasn't quite right (the chief criticism being that the meat was too lean), other scientists are confident that this problem is easy to solve by directing some of the stem cells to develop into fat cells, instead of making the meat 100% muscle. According to the team, texture was the major hurdle, and in this category the burger scored well.

But vegetarians who are excited by the prospect of chowing down on "ethical beef" might be waiting longer than they thought. Many cell cultures, including those used to produce in vitro meat, use fetal bovine serum as a growth medium, and I somehow doubt that many vegetarians would be enthused by the prospect of eating meat that was ultimately fed on the fetus of a slaughtered cow. I'm certainly not.

To answer some outstanding questions I had about the current state of the research, I contacted Professor Mark Post, the Chair of Physiology at Maastricht University and lead researcher on the cultured beef project. He confirmed that his in vitro beef made use of standard cell culture techniques, which generally require fetal bovine serum. When I asked if a viable alternative were available, he noted:

There are already many serum-free media available for different types of cells. We have tested some of them with variable degrees of success. The most successful one will serve as the basis to further improve the medium.

Post pointed to algal extract as potentially promising, noting that finding the optimal growth medium is simply a matter of time.

These efforts have even earned the approval of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an animal rights groups that had previously offered a million dollar prize if any research team could develop a commercially viable cultured chicken product. While the deadline came and went without any researchers claiming the prize, the announcement out of Mastricht buoyed public interest in cultured meat products, and PETA announced that it would extend the contest until 4 March 2014.

Whether PETA's contest (which many scientists have criticised for its unrealistically tight timeline) will have a significant impact on the development of in vitro chicken fingers is difficult to say, although I'm personally doubtful. I'm cheered, however, to see the organisation endorse this endeavour; even given PETA's dubious public reputation (they're a polarizing force, to put it mildly), there are sure to be some who are swayed by their message.

And there will doubtless be some who will need a little persuading. However, every serious objection to the project that I've been able to discover boils down in some way to either a fallacious appeal to "the natural", or to that elusive "ick factor". One of my family members mused, "Would my body even recognize it as food?"

I fully expected the majority of the public to be resistant to the idea of "artificial" meat, and I asked Professor Post whether he shared my concerns. Being scientifically minded, he pointed out that a systematic survey conducted by Flycatcher Internet Research (using a cross-sectional cohort of the Dutch population) found that 63% of respondents looked favourably upon cultured beef. (Full disclosure: I was unfortunately unable to find this study; it's possible that these results have not yet been published, or it may not have been published in English.)

I asked Professor Post what would need to happen before we'll see cultured meat products on our supermarket shelves. He told me that cost-effectiveness will come largely from scaling up, and from incremental improvements to the production process, system automation, and recycling materials, and he notes, "Calculations based on current industrial production of stem cells for medical purposes indicate that this is feasible." Post told me that increasing the efficiency of the process is key to averting the burden that will be placed on the environment by increased demand for meat. He cautioned me that this isn't an easy task, and will require further investment, in terms of both money and time.

How long will it take? Well, Mark Post's team estimates ten years, but he stresses that there are a lot of unknowns here. I'd wager that within the next two decades cultured meat products will start hitting supermarket shelves. They'll likely start off as a novelty, or a luxury product, but I'm confident that these products will eventually supplant traditional agricultural meat as a dietary staple. And while you're waiting, if you're concerned about your food's environmental footprint, have you considered cricket? Gram for gram, crickets and mealworms beat out cows and pigs in terms of greenhouse emissions, and you won't have to wait decades for a cricket burger.

So what's next?

Well, I've already seen debates break out online among religious scholars as to whether in vitro pork could qualify as kosher. For me, I'm excited by the prospect of combining this technology with additive manufactories to create 3D printed foods. That's right: we're talking about a replicator, Star Trek style. Except it'll probably work pretty slowly, and it may be kind of gross.

But that's probably decades in the future. In my opinion, everyone's first priority should be fixing that lean-meat thing. Because bacon just wouldn't taste right any other way.

Winnipeg Sun Coverage of the "Mayan Apocalypse"

No, the world isn't ending today. Sorry to disappoint. But the Winnipeg Sun has quite the spread on the subject of the "Mayan" notpocalypse, this morning. I was contacted earlier in the week by two different journalists from the Sun who were writing stories about the (non-)event, and they'd heard about our party.

(By the way: in case you hadn't heard, the Winnipeg Skeptics and the Humanists, Atheists, and Agnostics of Manitoba are hosting a joint "End of the World" party tonight at the Assiniboine Golf Club at 2045 Ness Avenue. We're starting the evening off at 7:00 with an apocalypse-themed pub quiz, followed by music, dancing, and general merriment! There'll be food, a cash bar, and a silent auction. Tickets are $15, and there will be a few available at the door.)

Since space is limited in print media, I knew that only a few of the points that I made in the interviews would see the light of day, so I figured that I might as well share the answers to some of the questions that I was asked here:

Why are you skeptical that the world will end Friday?
The first rule of skepticism is that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and in this case there is good reason to disbelieve. First, while the thirteenth b'ak'tun of the ancient Mesoamerican long-count calendar does end on Friday, there's little reason to think that the Mayans actually believed the world would end on that day. (When your calendar runs out, you don't think it's the end of the world: you get a new calendar.) Second, even if Mayans did believe this, there's no reason to think that they'd be right. Third, every single proposed mechanism by which the world might end has been handily debunked by scientists in the appropriate fields (NASA has a web page devoted to it, for example). And finally, given the absolutely staggering number of actual end of the world predictions that have come and gone uneventfully, I think that we're pretty safe.

As a skeptic, how do you think the world will end (assuming it will, some day)?
That's a hard question to answer. If you're taking a human-centric view, then I'm rather concerned about both environmental degradation and international conflict. I think that the planet will probably outlast us well enough, but given enough time some astronomical calamity is almost certain to do the Earth in, be it an asteroid, a gamma ray burst, or the eventual expansion of the sun into a red giant, 5 billion years from now. Those interested in ways the world could end would do well to take a look at astronomer Phil Plait's book Death from the Skies.

Is there any goal to the party or just a get together in itself?
Simple good cheer is the primary purpose, to be honest. Sharing a drink and a laugh with other members of the community is the way many people choose to spend their time during the holiday season, and the "non-event" of the supposed Mayan Apocalypse makes a convenient focal point for the festivities. And although I doubt many people are seriously worried about it, the party should add some levity to the "doom and gloom" that people might otherwise expect from discussions surrounding the apocalypse.

Can people who think that the world might end attend the party?
Of course! Hopefully they'll find it reassuring. They'll certainly find it fun.

Why do people get so worked up over things like this?
Well, it's complicated, but there are a few straightforward reasons. Hucksterism, for one. Several authors have latched on to the date to lend weight to their crank ideas, exploiting the public's fears to make a quick buck on book sales (the supposed collision between Earth and the fictional planet "Nibiru", for example, was originally supposed to happen in May 2003, but was conveniently rescheduled after the planet failed to appear). Failed apocalypses are also quickly forgotten, so it's easy to overlook how commonplace these sorts of predictions actually are. There have been at least a dozen failed end of the world predictions in the last decade alone! There's really no reason to worry. None at all.

Finally, if you happen to know any Maya (yes, they're still around), kindly apologise to them on behalf of the rest of the human race for all of the nonsense. We'll try not to be too much of a bother from now on.

Where's My Cure for Cancer?

In this episode of Where's My Jetpack?, Old Man Newman demands to know "Where's My Cure for Cancer?"

Cancer isn't really one disease. Instead, it's the collective name given to many diseases with the same underlying issue: uncontrolled cell growth. These growths have the potential to "metastasize" or spread to other parts of the body.

Cancer is scary. While there are a host of factors that can increase your risk of developing cancer, it seems that if you live long enough, you'll end up with cancer of one sort or another. It's pretty much an inevitability.

According to the World Health Organization, cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide. This wasn't always the case, of course. A few thousand years ago, rates of cancer were much lower. So what happened? Is it due to the nefarious intervention of pharmaceutical companies or our modern industrial way of life? Although being sedentary can increase the rates in some types of cancer, this uptick in cancer rates seems to be largely because, on average, we live longer than at any time in the past (thanks in large part to science-based medicine and nutrition). Age is an independent risk factor for many cancers. This is most likely due to the fact that the DNA mutations that lead to cancer accumulate over time, and aging compromises the cellular repair mechanisms that prevent cancer.

Modern medicine has made steady progress over the last hundred years, developing preventions, treatments, and cures for one disease after another. These successes led to rampant speculation that a cure for cancer was right around the corner. But while many incremental advances in the state of cancer treatment have been made over the last several decades, and multiple types of cancer (including breast and prostate cancer) are all but curable when caught early, no one breakthrough has resulted in anything that can be reasonably called a universal "cure for cancer".

While many medical experts have pointed out that the early successes of modern medicine may have led us to be overly optimistic and that cancer is a tough nut to crack, conspiracy theorists have interpreted this perceived lack of progress as a sign that the large pharmaceutical companies are either uninterested in curing cancer or are actively suppressing one or more known cures.

There's actually a sizable difference between these two options. Let's tackle the more extreme claim first.

As with just about any expansive conspiracy theory, the idea that Big Pharma is trying to hide cancer cures from the public just doesn't add up. Perhaps the most obvious problem is that cancer researchers and those who work for pharmaceutical companies are people too! They're not robots, blind to the plight of their fellow human beings. They have family members who die of cancer, and, believe it or not, they die of cancer themselves. Even if you think that these people are only in it for the money, what good is a tidy profit if you're not around to spend it?

But even if Big Pharma were almost entirely peopled by human beings who cared nothing for themselves, their families, or the public at large, remember that it only takes one whistleblower, one person to leak the information to the public, and the whole house of cards comes tumbling to the ground. The larger the conspiracy, the more quickly it is likely to collapse. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead."

But now lets turn to the more plausible hypothesis: that Big Pharma isn't terribly interested in curing cancer, because there would be no profit in it.

First of all, I'd like to point out that cancer isn't an infectious disease: it's not something that you can "catch" (although there are some pathogens that significantly increase the risk of contracting certain cancers). While it's possible to completely eliminate an infectious disease from a population (as we have done with polio, for example, or smallpox), an effective cure for cancer wouldn't prevent new cases from cropping up. For this reason, pharmaceutical companies wouldn't have to worry that a successful treatment of the disease would elimate it, hurting their bottom line. They could keep selling the treatment forever!

"But," I hear you say, "what if the drug weren't patentable?" Right, because nobody ever makes money on drugs that are off-patent. Tell that to every company that sells, oh, I don't know, acetylsalicylic acid: Aspirin has been off-patent for 95 years.

I'll grant, for the sake of argument, that many pharmaceutical companies may deem R&D on cancer cures unprofitable, and may decide to spend their research dollars elsewhere. So what? Is it wrong, somehow, for a for-profit corporation to spend its research dollars on those things that seem the most profitable? Perhaps. I actually think that it very well might be. But then I would ask you to recognise that this is not a critique of Big Pharma: it is a critique of capitalism.

In any event, we should expect corporations to spend their money in such a way as to maximize their profits, often with basic science research falling by the wayside. That's one of the reasons that publicly funded science is so important!

Pharmaceutical companies are generally not well liked. This is one of the reasons that these sorts of conspiracy theories exist. But can you imagine what a public relations coup it would be to be, to be known as the company that cured cancer?

Look, there's plenty that's wrong with the pharmaceutical industry. We don't need to waste our time leveling such petty criticism at them when so many real problems are at hand.

Stories of Big Pharma suppressing "the cure" are very common, and tend to gain a lot of traction on social media. An article titled "Scientists cure cancer, but no one takes notice" is the most recent example of this phenomenon. The journalistic irresponsibility doesn't end with the hyperbolic title. When one examines the details of the story, one quickly finds that while dichloroacetate (the chemical discussed in article) may prove a useful addition to the oncologist's toolbox, it is far from a "cure for cancer". At the time the article was published, there was limited evidence that it was effective against some forms of cancer in rodents, but no human trials had been conducted. But—contrary to the claims of the article's author—research continues to be done on DCA. A Big Pharma conspiracy this is not.

And there is light on the horizon. New developments in cancer treatment, big and small, happen all the time. May 2012 saw at least two promising new treatments announced. The first involves genetically modifying a patient's own immune cells. Trials have been conducted in human patients, and the treatment shows great promise in terms of both safety and efficacy. This gene therapy was initially designed to combat both cancer and HIV, but researchers believe that it can even successfully combat arthritis and other non-life threatening diseases.

The second new treatment involves a drug called thioridazine that shows promise in combating cancer stem cells, which seem to be the source of several cancers, including breast cancer and leukemia. According to the study's principal investigator, thioridazine is capable of actually changing cancer stem cells into non-cancerous cells. This research was conducted in-vitro (meaning in cultured cells outside a body), with in-vivo human trials to follow.

The truth is that it is unlikely that we will find any one cure for all cancers any time soon, but science-based medicine has been doing a very respectable job of extending the survival of patients diagnosed with all types of cancer. While the major breakthroughs have been few, incremental progress has been great. While incidences of cancer have increased slightly since 1975 (going from roughly 400 US cases per 100,000 in 1975 to 465 US cases per 100,000 in 2009), cancer mortality has dropped significantly, going from 199 per 100,000 to 173 per 100,000. While statistics vary by type of cancer, mortality was roughly 50% in 1975 and has fallen to about 37% in the United States.

When will we seen an end to cancer? I predict, perhaps optimistically, that within the next forty years most cancers will have ceased to be life-threatening. This is just one of the many reasons that we need to fund scientific research.

Prometheus

There be spoilers. You have been warned.


I don't believe that I have ever been this insulted by a film. Ever.

I don't habitually use language like this, but... Fuck that movie.

Before I saw it, my friend Gary told me that it was "officially the worst film" that he had seen in a long time. "Please, do not spend your money on it. RottenTomatoes.com lies. It lies so much." I assumed that he was speaking hyperbolically. I was mistaken.

Several reviews from several people have adequately covered most of the problems that I had with the film. I'll post a few stray observations below, before linking to the more comprehensive reviews.

You'll probably notice that I'm a little angry at the people who made this film. I was really looking forward to it, and I was sorely disappointed. I can forgive the hand-waving and the bad science and the characters behaving like utter morons—but such bad storytelling really bothered me.

So... Here goes.

So there's a cave painting of a tall dude pointing at five dots in the sky. What the hell are those dots supposed to be? A constellation? Sure, lets go with that. And now they've arrived at the only "galactic configuration" that matches the map. Ignoring the fact that the term "galactic configuration" is either misused or hopelessly vague, there's only one star at the destination. If those dots were stars, how did you know which one to go to? They can't be planets, because there seems to be only one planet in the system. With one moon. And why did the cave paintings point to an alien bioterrorism facility instead of something more helpful? I guess the aliens hate us. Except that the cave paintings are from a very long time ago. Ridley Scott revealed in an interview that the reason the Engineers hate us is because we killed space-Jesus (not kidding), but these paintings actually predate them being mad at us. So sending us to their weapons factory to be horribly slaughtered was, what, a practical joke?

The thing that I found most offensive about the film wasn't the fact that they called evolution "Darwinism" (although that alone is probably enough to make me lose all respect for anyone who approved the script), or the fact that "that's what I choose to believe" is considered sufficient to justify the pants-on-head assertion that Erich von Däniken had any idea what he was talking about. Because it makes sense to just believe things arbitrarily, instead of believing things that, you know, have some basis in reality.

No, the most offensive thing about the film was the tremendously hackneyed writing, filled to the brim with trite dialogue, cheap "twists", and characters doing things without any apparent motivation. The film seems sadly convinced that it is exploring deep and profound questions, but collapses into a mess of plot-holes and bad science after the most cursory of inspections.

And the big reveals? That Weyland was still alive? Yeah, I know! That was painfully obvious from the moment that Noomi Rapace wants her alien squid-baby aborted (sorry, a "delivered by Cesarean"—can't use the "A-word"!) and we learn that the AutoDoc is configured only for male patients. That Weyland is Charlize Theron's father? Yeah, I know! The way she delivered that line, by the way? The worst part of the film, in my opinion.

When entering a scary alien structure on an unknown moon, be sure to take your helmet off at your first opportunity, because there couldn't possibly by any dangerous alien pathogens in the air*, and the fact that the air contains some level of oxygen is surely a guarantee that it is safely breathable and will remain so. Also, don't bring any weapons, because that would be stupid.

There's more, like the fact that the guy who criticizes Noomi Rapace for wearing a cross has a cross tattooed on his arm. There's the fact that they inexplicably have Guy Pearce (in horrible old-age makeup) playing a centenarian. Because, as my friend Brendan pointed out, there is not a single distinguished elderly actor in Hollywood. And running directly away from a large alien spaceship that's rolling toward you, rather than dodging to the side? Really?

It's worth noticing that I actually disagree with Steven Novella a bit in The Science of Prometheus, above. I thought that the bad storytelling was actually worse than the bad science. And you know me: I love me some science.


Addendum: Phil Plait has weighed in, and mentions something that actually caused me to say, "Oh, come on!" while watching the film:

In a key scene, scientist Elizabeth Shaw compares a sample of Engineer tissue to human DNA, exclaiming that it's a 100 percent match. The thing is, if you compared two humans' DNA you wouldn't get a 100 percent match! That only happens with identical twins. There are lots of DNA variations between humans, so a 100 percent match is literally impossible. And last I looked, we're not 8-foot-tall bald translucent bodybuilders with anger management issues.


* My understanding of theoretical astrobiology leads me to believe that normally this actually wouldn't be a problem, because the probability that any given alien pathogen would be compatible with human physiology would be vanishingly small—but given that the whole reason that they're there is that they think the aliens made the human race, the idea that there might be some physiological compatibility there suddenly becomes a whole lot more plausible.

In this episode of Where's My Jetpack?, Old Man Newman demands to know "Where's My Pet Dinosaur?"

Who hasn't wanted a pet dinosaur? How cool would that be? As cloning technology improves, the Flintstones is starting to look less like fantasy and more like speculative fiction.

But, if we want to clone a dinosaur, we'd need to first obtain fairly complete genetic material from a dinosaur—and that's not easy.

Unfortunately, outside of Michael Crichton's imagination, there's currently no plausible way to recover dinosaur DNA. While DNA can be isolated from the soft tissues of frozen or mummified specimens, the DNA molecule tends to degrade fairly rapidly, putting on upper limit on the age of specimens from which useful genetic material can be recovered. Dinosaurs, unfortunately, are well outside of that limit.

(As an aside, because of this upper limit to ancient DNA recovery, the fact that DNA has in some cases been identified in some older specimens has been used by creationists to argue for a young earth—in fact, this DNA is almost certainly the result of contamination, rather than being genetic material from the fossil itself.)

So, if you're looking for a pet brontosaurus (or Apatosaurus, if you want to be pedantic) you're probably out of luck. But don't despair: your quest for a prehistoric pet isn't hopeless!

Many modern animals carry within them the genetic blueprints of their ancestors, with only minor developmental "tweaks" having occurred along the way. In his 2009 book, How to Build a Dinosaur: Extinction Doesn't Have to Be Forever, palaeontologist Jack Horner describes his plan to revive ancient dinosaurs by gently manipulating the DNA of birds, which are the modern descendants of theropods. According to Horner, a chicken is the best bet; he hopes to nudge a chicken's DNA slightly as it develops in the egg, resulting in what he calls a "chickenosaurus".

While many evolutionary developmental biologists think that Horner is a little too optimistic, Horner argues that many of the evolutionary changes made over the years could be undone with this method. Ancestral traits, including tails, teeth, and clawed hands, could be "reactivated", resulting in an entirely new breed of theropod dinosaur.

It might be a while before the chickenosaurus is ready for prime time, but perhaps you're willing to dream a little bigger. Have you considered the woolly mammoth?

More than a dinosaur, as a kid I longed for a pet woolly mammoth, and cloning this furry behemoth should prove much easier than recreating a dinosaur.

Mammoths have only been extinct for about 10,000 years, making DNA degradation much less of an issue. Not only that, the mammoth genome was sequenced in 2008, giving scientists a nearly complete genetic picture of the animal, which is very closely related to the three existing species of modern elephant. Because of these similarities, it would be relatively easy to "nudge" the elephant genome in a few places to create a mammoth.

This is where you might expect me to rain on the parade by pointing out the difficulties involved in even minor genetic engineering efforts. But, believe it or not, things might be even easier.

In August of 2011, a remarkably well-preserved mammoth thigh-bone was discovered in the melting Russian permafrost. (Thanks, global warming!) Researchers at Japan's Kinki University and Russia's Sakha Republic mammoth museum are collaborating on a project to extract the marrow cells and use them to clone a mammoth without the need for genetic engineering. Despite the problems that plague cloning even modern animals, these intrepid researchers expect to have a successful mammoth clone within the next five years.

For every thousand species that have ever existed, scientists estimate that 999 of them are now extinct. While both of these schemes strike me as wildly optimistic, the idea that we might someday resurrect a few of these extinct species fills me with hope.

So here's the part of the segment where I take a wild stab in the dark: When can we expect to have prehistoric pets?

Woolly mammoths will surely arrive first. While the researchers say five years, I'd give it a generous 15, just to be safe. No word yet on how long it would take to develop a pygmy variety that you might keep as a house pet (frankly, I'm not sure that's even plausible)—so I'll just say ten years after that. A chickenosaurus? Probably not for another twenty-five years at least. That's a 100% certain scientific guarantee, of course!

Of course if you can't wait that long for for your pet dinosaur, just get a budgie. According to cladistics, the modern taxonomic classification of animals, budgies are dinosaurs. Really!

In this first episode of Where's My Jetpack?, Old Man Newman demands to know (appropriately enough) "Where's My Jetpack?"

Jetpacks have actually been around and functioning since the sixties, with Bell Aerosystems' "Bell Rocket Belt", fuelled by hydrogen peroxide, being among the first on the scene. Although it could travel at up to 100 km/h, the limitations of the peroxide fuel meant that it could fly for no more than 20 seconds or so, limiting its range to about 250 metres.

There are some reports that the Germans developed a jetpack-like device called the Himmelstürmer during World War II; it was ostensibly to be used to make short jumps to cross minefields, but was never fully tested. Take these reports with a grain of salt however, as reliable sources are difficult to find.

More recently the "Jetman", Yves Rossy, a Swiss inventor, as developed a strap-on wing suit and jetpack. Recent news reports have him flying in formation alongside two L-39C Albatros jets from the Breitling Jet Team, which is apparently the world's largest professional civilian aerobatics squad.

There are jetpacks out there right now, but they're not commercially available, and if you're looking for something out of Rocket Robinhood then you're in for a disappointment.

Current Technological Challenges:
  • The fuel. If you're just planning to strap a jetpack on to your street clothes and you'd like to avoid setting yourself on fire, it's best to avoid using actual rocket fuel.
  • Hydrogen peroxide is a popular fuel, but the thrust-to-fuel-volume is low, making for flights of very limited duration. In addition, many companies that formerly produced the highly concentrated H2O2 required for propulsion are either out of business or no longer producing the fuel.
  • While stability was a problem in early jetpack models, this problem has largely been solved by adding physical stabilizers (wings) to the packs. Another solution is to make use of computer stabilizers which make minute adjustments to the direction of thrust to maintain stability.
  • The training required to pilot a jetpack or rocket belt is a rather unpleasant combination of expensive and dangerous.
  • The packs themselves are also prohibitively expensive, and because the other challenges mentioned here render the technology of limited usefulness, development is not proceeding apace, and commercial availability may still be a ways off.

But if your definition of jetpack is a little more flexible, then you're absolutely in luck! Looking like something directly out of Super Mario Sunshine, the JetLev R200 water-powered jetpack is able to lift a person up to thirty feet into the air, where they can hover over the waves for up to four hours.

And it'll only run you $100,000!

But when will I have my own jetpack? I predict that jetpacks will be commercially available within the next twenty years, but will require a pilot's license, be vastly more expensive than you want them to be, and will have very restricted flight over urban areas. Some other sort of human flight technology, on the other hand, is surely on its way.
