The Pope Speaks on Technology

Gird your irony meters, folks.

According to Pope Ratzinger, technology makes it difficult to distinguish reality from fiction:

"New technologies and the progress they bring can make it impossible to distinguish truth from illusion and can lead to confusion between reality and virtual reality," the pope said.

"The image can also become independent from reality, it can give birth to a virtual word, with various consequences–above all the risk of indifference towards real life," he said.

"Impossible to distinguish truth from illusion"? "The risk of indifference towards real life"? Now what major world religion/corrupt gang of mobsters does that remind me of...?

Tip o' the miter to Brendan Curran-Johnson and Shunjie Lau.

  1. The way he phrases it makes it sound as though technology is just one big monolithic thing. I wonder which technology exactly he was talking about?

Maybe he's talking about video games. I know many people who play video games (including myself), but they are not living in any sort of illusion. It's like getting lost in a book or watching a movie. Perhaps in some extreme cases someone might lose touch with reality, but he cannot make a general statement like that based on some extreme outliers.

It seems more likely that he fears change because he doesn't understand it. I'll take what he has to say into consideration if he is more specific and provides some sort of evidence. Right now his claim has no basis.

It would be interested to see how indifferent to life he becomes after trying a Japanese toilet.

  2. Sure! But since when has the Catholic Church bothered with evidence? Pshaw.
